Key Stage 3 Recommended Reading

Here are books I absolutely recommend for students in Years 7-9. I’ve read (and re-read) all these books and recommend them on the basis that they are brilliant and a jolly good read.

Secrets of a Sun King by Emma Carroll

Secrets of a Sun King is an adventure story set in 1922. Lillian Kaye’s grandfather has passed on his fascination about Ancient Egypt to his granddaughter. When he falls ill, Lillian opens a mysterious parcel to find a vase that seems to have an ancient curse placed upon it. In order to break the curse and save her grandfather, Lillian sets off on a long and exciting journey. It’s an exciting read and I loved the strong-minded central character, Lillian, who refuses to be held back by the expectations of girls at that time.

Emma Carroll is one of my favourite authors. Here are some of her other books I recommend:

The Lie Tree by Frances Hardinge
